A pair of uStream Two speakers either side of a wall-mounted TV in a living room

TWS mode, short for True Wireless Stereo, tells a speaker to work as one half of a pair, either left or right, instead of playing everything on its own. You switch it on, the speakers find each other, and your phone or TV then connects to only one of them. If you want the full story on how the technology works, start with what True Wireless Stereo is and whether it is real stereo. This guide is the practical side: what the mode does, how to pair a set and what to do when it does not work.

What does TWS mode actually do?

Without it, a Bluetooth speaker plays the whole mix from one box. With it, two speakers share the job. One becomes the primary, receives the signal from your phone or TV, and passes the other channel to its partner. One plays the left channel and the other the right, so the stereo picture the recording engineer made reaches you with real separation.

The practical effect is that you stop thinking about two devices. Your phone shows a single speaker name, you set one volume, and the pair behaves as a single system. That is also the test that it is working: if your phone lists two separate speakers, you are probably not in stereo.

How do you pair TWS speakers?

The buttons differ between makers, so the manual is the final word, but the order of steps is nearly always the same.

  1. Check you have a matched pair. Most TWS modes need two of the same model.

  2. Switch both speakers on and keep them close. This makes the first link easier.

  3. Clear old connections. If either speaker has paired with a phone before, disconnect it or switch that phone’s Bluetooth off.

  4. Put the speakers into TWS mode. This is usually a press or a long press on a speaker, and it usually confirms with a sound or a light.

  5. Wait for the link. The speakers find each other, and one is chosen as the primary.

  6. Connect your phone to the single speaker name that appears.

  7. Play a track with clear left and right sounds to check the channels, and swap the speakers if they are the wrong way round.

What can you do if TWS speakers will not pair?

Most failures come down to a short list.

  • Old pairings are in the way. Forget the speakers in your phone’s Bluetooth list and start again.

  • The speakers are different models. If the manual does not say they will pair, they probably will not.

  • A speaker is still connected to a phone. Disconnect it first, because an active phone connection can get in the way of the link.

  • They are too far apart. Bring them together for the first link, then place them.

  • The mode is wrong. Many speakers have a party or multi-speaker mode that plays the same signal on every unit. It looks similar, but it is not stereo.

  • Something needs a reset. Switch both speakers off, reset each one as the manual describes, then try again from step 1.

Can you link more than two speakers?

TWS is a pair: a left and a right. Some speakers also have a mode that links several units and plays the same sound on all of them, which is useful for covering a garden or a big room. It is a different job. For music and TV in one room, a left and right pair is what you want. Our article on stereo vs mono speakers explains why.

Do uStream speakers need TWS mode?

There is nothing to switch on. A pair of uStream Three, uStream Two, uStream One or uStream Cube speakers links automatically, with no app and no Wi-Fi, so the only connection you make is from your source. There is no wire between the speakers, so you can place them where they sound best.

All the inputs on these models sit on the left speaker, and each of them connects to a TV through HDMI ARC, so the TV remote controls the volume. Our guide to connecting speakers through HDMI ARC takes you through that step.

Where should you put the pair once they are linked?

In the same places you would put a wired pair. The link frees you from a cable, but it does not change how stereo works. Put them either side of the screen or the listening position, and a little way from the walls. Our guide to where speakers should be placed gives the starting point.

Frequently asked questions

What does TWS mean on a speaker?

It stands for True Wireless Stereo. It means two speakers link to each other wirelessly and play as a left and right pair.

What is the TWS function on a Bluetooth speaker?

It is the setting that makes the speaker act as one half of a stereo pair, instead of playing the full mix alone. You normally turn it on, then pair your phone with the single speaker name that appears.

Can you pair two different speakers in TWS mode?

Usually not. Most makers require two of the same model, so check the manual before you buy a second speaker.

Can you use TWS speakers with a TV?

Yes. TWS describes the link between a pair. What matters for the TV is the input. uStream Three, uStream Two, uStream One and uStream Cube each connect to a TV through HDMI ARC.
